Lyrical is a very popular style of dance. Classes are primarily filled with passionate dancers who want to combine technique and musicality. The goal of this class is to convey the emotion of a song’s lyrics through dance. Intense emotional expression of the face and body are necessary. They tell a story that evolves along the lines of the song they are dancing to. Your dancer will be challenged to dig deep for inspiration, which will make them stronger as a dancer emotionally and physically.Ballet and jazz are a prerequisite for this class because those two styles of dance are an essential component of this advanced style of dance due to proper placement and body alignment. The choreography that the students will learn is based around feeling and emotion, which leads to learning more challenging movements. We will be learning routines choreographed to all types of music from slow ballads to pop, to dynamic, fast-paced songs. Students will be learning how to connect movements seamlessly from one to the next and hold the move for as long as is musically possible. Students will be expected to wear tight fighting dance attire so the teacher can properly critique proper body placement. Lyrical/jazz shoes will be worn at times and we will also be dancing barefoot at times. Students must be at least 9 years old and have previous ballet class experience to begin taking a lyrical dance class. The reason for this is that it can be quite difficult to teach this style of dance to younger students, as they lack the ability to express emotions they have yet to experience.
